Early on in my career, I interviewed the conductor Peter Leonard for a documentary. I have employed his perspective on leadership throughout my career.
He said everyone thinks the conductor of an orchestra is so in-charge. In fact, he pointed out, an orchestra is all about sound and the conductor is the only member of an orchestra that does not make a sound.
The successful conductor has to convince disparate individuals to come together and make beautiful music. You don't make them play, you make them want to play the way you want.
